Lightspeed Systems Power Manager Helps School Districts Save Energy Costs and Earth’s Natural Resources

Lightspeed Systems introduces automated energy conservation software that enables centralized management of PC power usage and documents the savings

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Jan. 23, 2009 – More than 70 percent of K-12 technology leaders who responded to a survey conducted by CDW-G last year said they support the idea of going “green,” but don’t know everything they could do to improve energy efficiency. Lightspeed Systems Inc., a leader in network security and management software for schools, unveiled today automated energy conservation software that enables school and district IT staff to easily manage, reduce and report energy use and costs for all the computers on their networks. Lightspeed Systems Power Manager helps schools and districts save money and minimize their carbon footprint.

To power one computer continuously can cost $125 in direct annual electrical fees, according to a report by the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Environmental Center. This adds up to a significant amount of money for districts that operate thousands of computers on their networks. Unattended or unused computers across a school or district network can drain budgets, as well as natural resources.

“The nation’s growing awareness of critical energy issues, coupled with tight school budgets, has pushed green technology to the top of wish lists for many school leaders,” said Scott Garrison, president of Lightspeed Systems. “Computer power management technology is an easy way for schools to do their part to protect the earth for future generations, while cutting energy costs.”

Power Manager monitors energy consumption and directs low-power states and shutdown times for all computers on a network. By powering down unused computers, schools can save $25 to $75 per computer annually through reduced energy waste. As an added benefit, schools may be eligible for “green” rebates from their local utility company by implementing energy-saving measures and technologies. Detailed reports produced by Power Manager document energy savings and return on investment for school stakeholders.

Centralized controls in the Power Manager application allow network administrators to create and enforce energy conservation policies customized to meet the needs of multiple locations. Computer users are alerted that a computer is going to shut down, and given the option to bypass the shut-down if needed. Power manager is easy to deploy using Active Directory or Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) group policies to push out client software, or by using the workstation grouping feature to simplify large installations.

Power Manager integrates seamlessly with Lightspeed Systems’ Total Traffic Control software, designed for educational institutions to provide a cost-effective and efficient network administration solution. Total Traffic Control is a sophisticated, easy-to-use network security application, which provides a full range of network protection features, including content filtering, spam management, bandwidth management, antivirus protection, extensive reporting capabilities, email archiving, and mobile filtering.
