BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – March 2, 2010 – In districts with distributed networks, large bandwidth, thousands of users, and high network traffic, filtering Web access and blocking spam can create bottlenecks, network availability issues, and management headaches. To address these problems, Lightspeed Systems Inc. introduces a new product line that integrates its award-winning software with premium hardware to enable districts to manage their high-capacity networks easily and effectively. The Lightspeed High-Capacity Network Solutions enhance user safety and productivity, strengthen network security, and ensure compliance with federal regulations, all without hindering speed or performance.
The Lightspeed High-Capacity Network Solutions include a high-speed appliance operating on top of a hardened and secured operating system that is preinstalled with the company’s smart Internet filtering or powerful spam-blocking software. The integrated hardware-software packages feature two new network appliances: Lightspeed Rocket, Web Access Manager, and Lightspeed Rocket, Email Manager.
With variations for network capacity and redundancy, districts can choose the appliance that fits their technical requirements and network architecture. Both of the Lightspeed Rockets, the first in a series of network appliances, can easily handle the highest traffic volumes, providing throughput of 1 Gigabit per second. Larger capacity models are planned for release this summer.
As educators rely increasingly on Web-based resources and applications to provide engaging, interactive learning experiences, district IT staff are challenged with managing a growing network with more users, higher bandwidth, and mounting safety and security threats. Network performance and reliability are critical for maximizing educational opportunities. Lightspeed Rocket, Web Access Manager enables districts to balance learning and security in an online environment while maintaining network speed and availability. The product offers intelligent features for customization, granular policy control, safe Web 2.0 access, mobile filtering, proxy blocking, and network threat protection. Using the product’s comprehensive monitoring and reporting tools, district administrators can review all user activity to enforce acceptable use policies, troubleshoot issues, and make adjustments as needed.
Lightspeed Systems recently developed major enhancements to its Web Access Manager software, a component of the High-Capacity Network Solutions, to provide a smarter filter that integrates online resource management and collaboration into the network security suite to minimize IT administration and maximize the educational potential of the Web. The software features My Big Campus, which provides a safe environment for sharing and accessing online videos, Web sites, and other content, along with collaborative tools such as blogs and messaging for educators and students. The safety and security risks are mitigated by requiring users to login with their network credentials, monitoring and reporting all user activity, allowing CIPA-compliant submissions only, and enabling users to flag inappropriate content for review or removal.
Lightspeed Rocket, Email Manager provides districts with efficient and effective spam blocking and email archiving for high-capacity networks. Email abuse can degrade network performance, leave the system vulnerable to threats, and expose users to time-wasting and offensive content. With Lightspeed Rocket, Email Manager, districts can easily block spam, and monitor, regulate, report on, and archive all messaging communications to meet federal e-discovery regulations, comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act, and increase user productivity. The product features more than 14 proven lines of defense for spam blocking, and comprehensive capturing and indexing of message details and attachments, with time-stamped and unalterable file integrity.
To create a comprehensive, cost-saving solution that meets all of their needs, districts can combine the two Rocket appliances with Lightspeed Systems’ other software products: Security Manager, Network Traffic Manager, and Power Manager – all part of the Total Traffic Control suite. Lightspeed Systems also offers software-only solutions for small school and district networks.
